A victim can emerge
from an accident with barely a scratch and still complain
of headaches, blurred vision, neck, ear and eye pain,
and other debilitating ailments. Since the 1940's,
orthopedists have known that neck injuries are virtually
always associated with injuries to the temporomandibular
joints (TMJ 's) and surrounding muscles. Early recognition
of the symptoms, and referral for proper treatment
typically provides the patient with relief from unnecessary
pain and suffering.
The Symptoms:
Ask your patient or
client: "Do you have any ONE of the following?"
- Headaches
- Face pain
- Eye pain
- Ear pain
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Ringing in
the ears
- Pressure in
the ears
- Difficulty
swallowing
- Frequent sore
throats
- Clicking noises
or pain when opening or closing the mouth
- Neck pain which
has not responded to treatment
Important: Complete
evaluation should be based on complaints of ANY
of the above symptoms. DO NOT WAIT for complaints
of jaw pain, since more severe degenerative changes
may have to occur before jaw pain is felt. Examination
is appropriate and treatment is normally successful
REGARDLESS of the presence of jaw pain.

Doctors may wish
to perform a SURVEY EXAMINATION. Compress the following
areas:
- the TM joints
in front of the ears
- the skin over
the temples
- just below the
ear
Pain Is Not Normal
- Further evaluation is appropriate
