Burning Tongue Treatment

Elimination Of Burning Tongue and Related Conditions

There are numerous causes of burning tongue including, but not limited to the following:

    • Yeast and other infections
    • Blood diseases
    • Nutritional deficiencies
    • Hormonal imbalances
    • Nerve injuries
    • Reflux of stomach acid
    • Tumors (rarely)
    • Reactions to Medications

If your dentist and physician ruled out specific causes, gargling with two teaspoons of Milk of Magnesia combined with a half a cup of water twice daily may be helpful.

If burning or changes in taste are your only symptom and Milk of Magnesia does not provide relief, we are of the opinion that you should see a specialist in Oral Medicine. They can be found by calling a local dental school or through the Yellow Pages by looking in the section which lists “Dentists”.

Studies suggest that approximately 75% of people who report burning tongue (glossodynia) or “Burning Mouth Syndrome” also suffer from headaches, face pain, and other muscle and joint related conditions which we treat. Interestingly, burning and painful tongue and burning mouth are almost always the first symptoms to go away.

ErnestineG208 “My tongue used to burn so bad that I was scared and distracted all the time. Without exaggerating, it felt lethal. Other doctors ignored me, but Dr. Klemons found out why it was hurting so badly and made it go away. I love the way everything is organized here. Everyone here is excellent. This is the best doctor’s office I have ever been to in my life.” – Ernestine G.
