Virtually everyday since 1972 we have seen people who suffered from chronic headaches and the other conditions we treat. For a very small number of patients, the cause includes infections, arthritis, cancer and other tumors, and referral from distant structures such as the heart*.
*In two cases, Dr. Klemons diagnosed the source as a heart attack which was felt in the face. In both cases he insisted on immediate treatment at a hospital. According to the cardiologist who treated the one for whom we were able to follow-up, the patient lived through the unfortunate event because of Dr. Klemons’ prompt and accurate diagnosis.

However, in most cases, the cause is an injury resulting from athletic events such as football, soccer, hockey, and martial arts-related mishaps, falls on ice and slick spots in supermarkets, or very commonly, car accidents. In many cases, the individual is aware of the problem moments or hours after the injury, but the scientific literature describes onset of symptoms as long as two years after accidents such as these. This is called “delayed onset” which can occur in patients who develop migraines and other headaches, face, eye, ear, and throat pain, ringing and pressure sensations in the ears, dizziness, “nervous twitching” (as seen in Tourette’s Syndrome and other movement disorders), etc. Auto accidents and other sources of injury can cause these symptoms even in cases where there is NO direct impact to the head, face, or jaw.
If the TM joints (jaw joints and related muscles) could not be injured without direct impact, they would probably be the only such structures in the body which could not be injured by sudden wrenching or by compression due to the changes in position which result from injury to adjacent structures.
It may surprise you to learn that while seatbelts and airbags save lives, many more people are injured due to their use. While we cannot stress the importance of using them for their life saving benefits, what do you think would happen to you if something exploded out of your steering wheel or dashboard and struck your face at 200 miles per hour. You just pictured an air bag hitting you. Fortunately, it can save your life, but do not be surprised if you develop headaches or other symptoms as a result.
Some are of the mistaken opinion that if the car in which the person is driving sustains little or no damage, the occupant cannot be hurt. However, cars, trucks, and buses weigh thousands of pounds and are made, to a great extent, of steel. On the other hand, people are about 70% water and have been known to die from “whiplash” without any direct impact at speeds as low as 12 miles per hour. It is consequently no surprise that humans can sustain significant painful injuries even when their automobile remains in perfect condition.
We are eager and privileged to help relieve the pain and suffering which is endured by so many patients from across the United States and around the world. Unfortunately, in numerous cases, the individuals consulted other doctors who found “nothing wrong.” There is no magic to our approach. Based on decades of experience with thousands of patients and a unique training background (i.e., the first doctorate in the world involving the treatment of headaches and facial pain using an orthopedic approach rather than by masking the problem with drugs), over 90% of our patients report that their conditions are gone when we discharge them from our care.
